Skills You Learn in a Muse Training

BY CAITLIN BURNS

“It’s just teaching Pilates. It can’t be that hard.”

Anyone who has ever uttered that sentence has never stood before a room full of people and guided them through a Pilates class that left them -unanimously- feeling a renewed sense of grounding and invigoration.  Keep in mind that everybody in that room has their own story and a rich personal history that informs how and why they’d like to move. When you are standing in front of that room, it is your job as a Pilates instructor to curate a class that celebrates the uniqueness of bodies and the plurality of their needs. This requires a certain amount of flexibility, not physically but mentally. As a Pilates instructor, you should feel confident in your abilities to pivot and accommodate whoever walks into your class, and a Muse Pilates teacher training will teach you how to do it seamlessly, with grace and humour intact.

We will help you find your Pilates voice and develop a communication style that speaks to a variety of learners. That’s why throughout this Pilates course, we encourage you to incorporate a variety of cueing styles into your classes so that if your first cue doesn’t land, your second will be seamlessly introduced so that your clients are never left hanging. This understanding will allow you to communicate and connect with everybody in the room and ensure they are getting the most out of class and are able to follow the flow.

In our Pilates training, we emphasize the importance of reading the room and tweaking your class at the moment to accommodate what you are seeing and how your clients are feeling. It’s all well and good to plan your class, but sometimes that plan fails to align with the needs of the clients who walked in the door, so it's up to your to perceive the mood and shift gears as needed. We know that sounds difficult, but our Pilates training is an excellent guide, and soon it will become a natural part of your teaching style. We will train you to teach Pilates that speaks to the diversity of bodies and movement needs.

We encourage our instructors to get creative. There isn’t one way to teach Pilates, and we offer you the chance to expand your thinking on the mat and play with the definition of a Pilates mat class. We absolutely love seeing what you come up with, and we’re often inspired to include some of your flows in our own classes. There is a beautiful sense of collaboration, sharing and community that runs through the trainings and the studio.

A Muse training teaches adaptability, ingenuity, patience, and compassion. We do not believe in creating cookie-cutter teachers, we want you to become a Pilates instructor with a teaching voice that is unique to you and entirely your own.
